I was a member of the Psychology Department faculty at the University of Massachusetts from 1968 to 2008, and continue as an Emeritus Professor and part-time Research Professor. I have been trying to understand how we understand language since the very early 1960's. Sometimes I think I learn a little bit. At least, I have had fun studying the comprehension of written and spoken language, and continue to enjoy it. Current research interests include the role of prosody in sentence and discourse processing, continued examination of serial vs. parallel (depth-first vs. breadth-first) models of parsing, the interface of syntax and semantics (considering such topics as discourse-linking, bound vs. referential interpretations of pronouns, the interpretation of plural pronouns, the interpretation of scalar adjectives, and the contributions of discourse and syntactic structure to the comprehension of ellipsis), and the use of both eyetracking and ERP measures of language processing.
