Information and communication technologies in teacher education: a planning guide

Produced by UNESDOC

This book provides resources to help teacher educators, administrators and policy-makers better apply ICTs to teacher education programmes. It begins with the premise that the teaching profession is evolving from an emphasis on
teacher-centred, lecture-based instruction to tudentcentred, interactive learning environments, and that ICTs are key in this transition. The authors state that designing and implementing successful ICT-enabled teacher education
programmes is the key to fundamental, wide- ranging educational reforms. .

TEACHER EDUCATION
THROUGH DISTANCE LEARNING TECHNOLOGY - CURRICULUM - COST - EVALUATION

UNESCO 2001

Summary of Case Studies in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, India, Mongolia, Nigeria, South Africa (two studies), United Kingdom. The studies represent an interesting mix of applications of different modes of distance learning. Distance education still remains, at heart, a reflection of individual national infrastructures and a wide complex of educational, social, cultural and economic issues, including the willingness and capacities of teachers themselves to become engaged in these modes in their various learning institutions and communities.

Articles of Relevance to Teacher Education

Education Policy Analysis Archives (Full online text of articles)

An interesting article on Teacher Quality and Student Achievement can be found in Volume 8, Number 1 Abstract is below.

Abstract of Teacher Quality and Student Achievement: A Review of State Policy Evidence (online at http://olam.ed.asu.edu/epaa/v8n1/)

Using data from a 50-state survey of policies, state case study analyses, the 1993-94 Schools and Staffing Surveys (SASS), and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), this study examines the ways in which teacher qualifications and other school inputs are related to student achievement across states. The findings of both the qualitative and quantitative analyses suggest that policy investments in the quality of teachers may be related to improvements in student performance. Quantitative analyses indicate that measures of teacher preparation and certification are by far the strongest correlates of student achievement in reading and mathematics, both before and after controlling for student poverty and language status. State policy surveys and case study data are used to evaluate policies that influence the overall level of teacher qualifications within and across states. This analysis suggests that policies adopted by states regarding teacher education, licensing, hiring, and professional development may make an important difference in the qualifications and capacities that teachers bring to their work. The implications for state efforts to enhance quality and equity in public education are discussed. (Note 1)

What HIV/AIDS Can Do to Education, and What Education Can Do to HIV/AIDS

by M.J. Kelly — School of Education, University of Zambia, Lusaka (18 April 2000)

Abstract

HIV/AIDS is conceptualised as having the potential to affect education through ten different mechanisms: reduction in demand, reduction in supply, reduction in availability of resources, adjustments in response to the special needs of a rapidly increasing number of orphans, adaptation to new interactions both within schools and between schools and communities, curriculum modification, altered roles that have to be adopted by teachers and the education system, the ways in which schools and the education system are organised, the planning and management of the system, and donor support for education

Country Education Descriptions & Statistics

Africa Live Database (World Bank)

A comprehensive database of macroeconomic and sectoral indicators, the Africa Live Database is a valuable source of information for those who collect and analyze data relating to African countries. The database covers macroeconomic, social, and sectoral data for countries as well as twenty regional groupings. Access to the database is free although it requires registration. The database displays documents in MSWord and statistics and maps in Excel. Although a little cumbersome to use, it provides access to reports and data not easily available elsewhere. Best for macro-economic indicators, but also contains data on Primary GER, literacy rates and expenditures on education.

UNESCO Education Statistics

Probably the best online source of education statistics, particularly if you are looking for enrollments by grade, age or gender.

Global Education Database 2000

This data base is particularly useful for making comparisons between countries in a region. You can select the countries and the indicators and it provides both the data and bar graphs.
