The Environmental Horticulture Club's Constitution was ratified on March 24th, 1999.


I.   The official name of the club is the Environmental Horticulture Club. 

II.  The objectives of the Environmental Horticulture Club are: 

  • To increase interest in the Horticulture Industry including landscaping, ornamental horticulture, turf grass management, fruit, vegetable and floriculture production. 
  • To provide opportunity for discussion of current events and technology among students.
  • To promote cordial relations among students, educators, and growers.
  • To foster good fellowship among members.
III. Membership is open to any interested full-time or part-time Five College Area student.  Voting       membership is open to all undergraduate and graduate members. 

IV. Membership is set by participation.  The officers will determine voting membership with review by the advisors.  Approval of the voting membership roster will be by the club at a regular meeting one week before the election. 

V.  The offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer are nominated and elected by the voting membership of the club. Elections are only valid if a quorum, 75% of the voting membership, is present.  In special circumstances an officer may hold more than one office at a time, if they are willing approved by a quorum.  Officers have the option of sharing duties with other club members if the situation permits.  The duties are as follows:

  PresidentThe President presides at all regular meetings, sees that the regulations set forth in the constitution are carried out, sees that theofficers and committees perform the duties designated to them by the constitution, and guide anddirect the club in the best interestof its members.  The President has Signature Responsibility for the club's official business (see Signature Responsibility Guide; available at Campus Activities Office).

  Vice President: The Vice President is the liason to all committees and presides over meetings in the
absence of the President. In the event that an office is held by a Stockbridge freshman leaving
for Co-op, the Vice President will assume their duties. In the event that an office becomes vacant 
between elections, the Vice President will assume the duties of that office until an election can be held. 

  SecretaryThe Secretary records attendance and minutes of  the club and presides over meetings in the absence of the President and Vice President.  Also, the Secretary and the Treasurer will provide the Club Advisor with all records for the year.  The Secretary will provide monthly updates of members and advisors to the club during the semester.  The Secretary will track and record all paperwork of the club including the Treasurer's report and the event sheets.

 TreasurerThe Treasurer keeps records of money being paid both in and out of the club's R.S.O. account and provides a report at every other meeting and following an event.  In the absence of the President, Vice President and the Secretary, the Treasurer will preside over the meetings. Also, the Treasurer and the Secretary provide the Club Advisor with all records from the calendar year. The Treasurer, in consultation with the President,  has Signature Responsibility (see Signature Responsibility Guide; available at Campus Activities Office).

VI.   There will be at least one advisor who is a member of the faculty or
        staff of the University of Massachusetts.  The club can have more than
        one official advisor if there is/are faculty and/or staff of the
        University of Massachusetts Amherst who are willing to serve in this
        capacity.  These advisors will serve in a non-voting, advisory capacity.
        In addition, the club must have a Student Activities Officer (S.A.O.)
        advisor for assistance in programming events and other concerns for
        Registered Student Organization (R.S.O.) related events.

VII. The officers will be elected by a majority vote by secret ballot. 
 

  • Official elections will be held during the first week in March, and must be held before Spring Break, for each of the four offices.
  • Duration of the Term of office will be June 1st until May 30th of the following year.  After the election, new officers will serve in an officer-elect position; working with current office-holders until the end of the current office-holder's term.
  • All members must be made aware of candidates and the date of election.  A current member list, provided by the Secretary, will be made available to the advisor(s) overseeing the election.
VIII. Regular meetings will be held weekly unless it is unnecessary to meet or in the case of trips, events, and/or holidays. Special meetings can be held at any time with one week advance notice to members.  Meeting time will be established at the first meeting of each semester. 

IX. Any officer not performing or performing poorly the duties of his or her 
      office may be removed by a two thirds vote by a quorum after the motion 
      has been tabled for one meeting and the opportunity to present defense 
      has been given by the officer and heard by the voting members. 

X.  Resignation of an officer: An officer may submit his/her resignation at 
      any meeting. 

  • Nominations for a successor will be open until the end of the next meeting.
  • All members must be made aware of candidates and date of election
  • Elections will be held as soon as reasonably possible
XI. Members may volunteer to be a part of any commitee.  The length of term on the comitee will be from the time of volunteering until the end of the event unless otherwise noted. Each committee must submit a written report at the conclusion of each event (a formal event sheet). 

XII. Amendments to the Constitution 

       Amendments may only be submitted at a regular club meeting and must be tabled until the next
       regular meeting.  A quorum must pass an amendment to the Constitution. 

XIII. Order of Business 

  • Reading of the minutes from the last meeting
  • Report from the Treasurer
  • Reports from the committees
  • Old and new business
  • Adjournment
XIV. Constitution Suspension 

         The Constitution can be suspended any time a quorum is present to accomplish necessary 
         business.
