Differential Conditioning Procedure
The first 20 trials were to CS+. Sixteen were reinforced
and four were not. This phase was designed to establish and evaluate a
CR. The intertrial interval (ITI) was 5 seconds. This phase was followed
without interruption by a series 80 trials, 40 to CS+ and 40 to CS- presented
in a random order. The CS+ was a gray square on the green surround (see
above). The duration of the square was 1000 ms. The word “Blink” appeared
in the center of the square 500 ms after the square’s onset, for a CS-US
interval (ISI) of 500 ms. The CS- was another gray square of a lighter
shade and somewhat smaller in size as shown above. As with CS+ this square
was projected for 1000 ms per trial, but without the blink command. Differential
conditioning procedures dictate that only one screen appear per trial.
That is, the two figures do not appear simultaneously but are separated
by at least 5 seconds, the ITI.
The above figures show the average waveforms for CS+ trials
(n = 56) and CS- trials (n = 40). In this task the subject did not anticipate
the blink command, hence did not acquire a CR.
Acquisition and Extinction Procedure
CS+ was presented for 80 trials. The intertrial interval
(ITI) was 8 seconds. This phase was followed without interruption by a
series 20 trials extinction trials. The CS+ was a red circle on the gray
surround (see above). The duration of the circle was 500 ms. The word “Blink”
(in white) appeared in the center of the square 250 ms after the circle’s
onset, for a CS-US interval (ISI) of 250 ms. Extinction trials consisted
of a red square on the gray surround without the “Blink” command projected
for 500 ms per trial. In this procedure the ISI was 250 ms, as opposed
to the 500 ms ISI in the differential procedure.
The above data shows the average waveforms for acquisition
trials (n = 80) and extinction trials (n = 20). In this task the subject
anticipated the blink command, thereby demonstrating acquisition of a CR.

Differential Conditioning
Procedure
The first 20 trials were to CS+. Eighteen
were reinforced and two were not. This phase was designed to establish
and evaluate a CR. The intertrial interval (ITI) was 8 seconds. This phase
was followed without interruption by a series 80 trials, 40 to CS+ and
40 to CS- presented in a random order. The CS+ was a gray square on the
green surround (see above). The duration of the square was 500 ms. The
word “Blink” appeared in the center of the square 250 ms after the square’s
onset, for a CS-US interval (ISI) of 250 ms. The CS- was another gray square
of a lighter shade and some what smaller. As with CS+ this square was projected
for 500 ms per trial, but without the blink command.
The above data shows the average waveforms for CS+ trials
(n = 58) and CS- trials (n = 40). In this task the subject anticipated
the blink command, thereby demonstrating acquisition of a CR.

Acquisition and Extinction
Procedure
CS+ was presented for 80 trials. The
intertrial intervals (ITIs) were 6, 7, or 8 seconds and varied randomly.
This phase was followed without interruption by a series 20 trials extinction
trials. The CS was a red circle on the gray surround (see above). The word
“Blink” appeared in the center of the circle 250 ms after the circle’s
onset, for a CS-US interval (ISI) of 250 ms. “Blink” appeared in white
letters on 57 trials and in black on the remaining 28 trials in a random
order. Extinction trials consisted of a red circle on the gray surround
without the “Blink” command projected for 500 ms per trial. During the
extinction phase, reinforced trials were presented on occasional trials
except during the last 6 trials which were all extinction trials.
The above data shows the average waveforms for acquisition
trials with the “Blink” command (n = 85) and extinction trials (n = 15).
In this task the subject anticipated the blink command, thereby demonstrating
acquisition of a CR.
