What is Community
Service Learning?
Service learning courses give students an opportunity
to learn by doing. Through service learning classes students engage in
activities which enhance the quality of someone else's life,
activities which benefit individuals, families,
communities, and government both here and abroad. Service
learning courses differ from community service, volunteer
work, practica or internships in their explicit linking of
theory and practice, that is, the linking of ideas developed within
the classroom and their practical application within the community through
guided reflection. These courses vary considerably in form
and content but all promote a practical understanding of society, citizenship
and community through participation.

to
Service -
As a land grant university, UMASS Amherst regards
service to the community as one of its cornerstones.
The unique mission and service orientation of the campus have influenced
our curricula, scholarship and outreach for over one hundred years. The
University offers many different avenues for service including internships,
practica, and volunteer work. The citizens scholar's program and the faculty
fellows programs are part of this tradition. The citizens scholars program
acknowledges students who distinguish themselves with exceptional
academic achievement and community service. The service learning fellows
program supports faculty who wish to develop and institutionalize new service
learning classes at UMASS. Currently more than 30 faculty service
learning fellows along with other faculty offer community service learning
courses at UMASS. Each year 8 new fellows add as many courses to the curriculum.
These courses along with new initiatives like the fourth credit option are
expanding the opportunities for service learning at UMASS.
