THE UMASS ALLIANCE FOR COMMUNITY TRANSFORMATION (UACT)

UACT is a unique partnership of UMass students, faculty and members of grassroots community organizations. We work together to design programs that build community, promote social and economic justice, advance cross-cultural understanding and serve the educational and civic objectives of our Land Grant University. UACT's collaborations with communities in Massachusetts and beyond are built around both curricular and co-curricular Alternative Breaks. We serve as the coordinating organization for curricular Alternative Spring Break, Alternative Summer Break, Reverse Spring Break and Alternative Service Weekends at UMass. We design and offer leadership training for students who wish to serve as group leaders on Alternative Breaks and we serve as consultants to faculty who wish to incorporate alternative breaks into their courses. We also run workshops on how to design alternative curricular breaks and how to train student leaders for these programs. UACT is run by a CORE group of 5-7 student leaders all of whom are alumni of UACT alternative breaks. These leaders work together with a faculty advisor to manage all aspects of UACT programs from curriculum design to leadership training, to classroom facilitation to fundraising. UACT works with community leaders to evaluate ongoing collaborations and to design new programs and partnership activities. We strive to engage in work that transforms our classrooms, our institutions, our communities an ourselves by rejecting the constraints of the conventional classroom and by making the roles that we play as students, teachers, citizens and activists more seamless.
