Appendix C: Descriptions of Required Courses for Asian American Studies

ENG 204-INTRODUCTION TO ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES, Prof. Sunaina Maira
This course is an introduction to the history, politics, and cultural production of Asian American communities, and also to Asian American studies as an interdisciplinary field that is evolving and expanding. Upon entry into the U.S., migrants from Asia--as well as from Asian communities in other nations in the Americas and around the world--are
variously positioned in the landscape of U.S. ethnic and racial politics and in relation to the category "Asian American." Why and when this coalitional alliance was constructed, and how it has been used to respond to, and actively create, constructions of "Asian American-ness," is one of the major questions addressed by the course. We will examine themes such as borders, labor, space, citizenship, popular culture, and the body, using texts by and about Asian Americans, including theoretical works, fiction, ethnographic studies, and documentary film.

ASIANS 297-REDEFINING COMMUNITY IN ASIAN AMERICA, Prof. Sunaina Maira
This course examines the social and cultural meanings and the political and historical contexts for creating "community" in Asian America, and in Asian American studies. It explores the central role that community politics play in social activism. Through multidisciplinary readings from history, social sciences, literature, and cultural studies, the students will engage with past and current projects exploring the relationships of Asian American studies to communities.

EDUC 329-INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION (COMMUNITY-SERVICE LEARNING),
Prof. Sally Habana-Hefner
This seminar is designed to use Paulo Freire's approach of action-reflection whereby the intersection with the community is the action and the seminar is the time used for reflection and learning. Class meetings build students' skills and competencies in preparation for outreach to Asian immigrant communities of Western Massachusetts. Teams of students will participate in community service learning activities.
