Leadership Position Descriptions

Here are some of the essential leadership positions, and a description of what each one is and does:

E-Board

President
The President is at the top of the positions of Alpha Phi Omega, and is ultimately responsible for its progress. The president supervises the other officers, and ensures that the fraternity lives up to its chapter and national standards. The president presides over all standard meetings. The president essentially ensures that Alpha Phi Omega Kappa Omicron runs properly.

Service Vice President
Service is one of the three cardinal principles of Alpha Phi Omega, and it is around service that the fraternity operates. The SVP is ultimately in charge of each and every service project that happens through the fraternity, though he/she may appoint service project chairs (see below). The SVP may also work closely with the MVP and FVP to plan service projects at other events. The SVP is in charge of planning the dates of events, working with the treasurer to create a budget, ensuring there are brothers at the event, and much more.

Membership Vice President
The MVP is in charge of organizing, evaluating, and submitting all information regarding membership, of both brothers (active, inactive, alum) and pledges. The MVP plans the pledge retreat at the start of the semester. The MVP keeps accurate records of member attendance and other important files. The MVP is in charge of Rush, though he/she will usually assign a Rush Chair.

Fellowship Vice President
Friendship--or Fellowship--is one of the three cardinal principles of Alpha Phi Omega. The FVP is ultimately responsible for all fellowship events, which are events that help strengthen the bonds of friendship among members. Fellowship events are also great ways for pledges to meet brothers, and to work on requirements. The FVP is also in charge of planning the cabin trip and the banquet, both at the end of the semester.

Administrative Vice President
The AVP shares many duties as the standard secretary position: maintaining the calendar, taking minutes, updating documnts, etc. However, in KO, the AVP does a lot more, too. The AVP also ensures that the office stays clean and organized. Additionally, the AVP assists the President in supervising all chapter activities and serves as coordinator between all chapter committees and shall be an ex-officio member of all committees.

Treasurer
The duties of the Treasurer are to receive and oversee all money transactions of the chapter and to keep an accurate record thereof. The Treasurer makes all payments to the chapter upon proper authorization. He/she has the responsibility of collecting all dues, fees, and assessments of the chapter and deposit said funds with the campus center for student development of the University. It is the treasurer's responsibility to keep the chapter informed on the conditions of the Treasury. He shall maintain a file on all responsibilities and aspects on the office of Treasurer. He shall perform all other duties as are required by his office, or as directed by the President.

Other Positions

Sergeant-at-Arms
Sergeant at Arms is basically the "peace-keeper" and "order-keeper" of the fraternity. They settle disputes and maintain order when things get out of hand. The SaA also distributes ballots and determines the outcome of paper votes within the fraternity, as well as takes quick count of any votes that take place at general meetings. Ideally, they know the by-laws well enough to reference them in times of mayhem or confusion.

Security Chair
The Security Chair is in charge of planning, organizing, and implementing all security events. A security event is an opportunity for APO to help other RSO's on campus. If another RSO is having a big event (a dance, a fashion show, etc), APO members will volunteer their time to act as security. The Security Chair must communicate efficiently with the other RSO, must ensure that enough brothers sign up and attend the security event, must work directly with the President, SVP, and Treasurer, and must perform other duties, as well.

Service Project Chair
Because APO is a community service fraternity, the biggest aspect of membership is performing community service, usually through projects that APO plans. For any of the big events (Merit Badge University, Boston Marathon, etc), the SVP appoints another brother to run the event. They must work closely with the SVP, but at the same time runs most of the event alone: planning the date(s), working with external groups, ordering/reserving supplies, etc. A service project chair does a lot of work, but helps the SVP considerably.
