1. Exercise: Using the permanent SAS data set that you created in Problem #4 in Homework 3 (using the Research Problem on the Intensive Care Unit Study) do the following:

• add a label to the data set
• add labels to each variable
• save the data set as a permanent data set
• create formats for categorical variables
• link the formats to variable in a temporary data set to be used for the descriptive analysis

Use ANALYZE to conduct a preliminary descriptive analysis.

Write a SAS program to conduct the descriptive analysis that includes output from each of the following procedures (PROC MEANS, PROC FREQ, PROC CHART) and summarize the results in a descriptive report (3 pages or less). Include in an appendix a copy of each program that you used. Turn in a copy of your report.

Use column input to read the ASCII data set lec3a.dta into SAS (as well as you can). Do not change anything in the ASCII data set. [Note that it is not possible to read all data values in correctly.]

• Copy your SAS program, the data, and the data read into SAS (using PROC PRINT), into a Word-processing Document.
• Briefly write advise to a "Data Entry Person" so that in the future, you will be able successfully to read the data.

Print the Word-processing document to turn in.
