Exercise and Metformin Study
As you may know, the number of people with Type-2 diabetes has increased dramatically over the last few decades. Many more people have “prediabetes”, a condition that makes them much more likely to develop Type-2 diabetes in the future, and are not even aware that they are at risk of developing Type-2 diabetes. Studies have shown that people with prediabetes can dramatically reduce their risk of getting the disease by increasing physical activity and/or losing weight. Metformin (also known as Glucophage), a drug commonly used to treat Type-2 diabetes, is also effective in preventing the disease. We are interested in studying the combined effect of a modest amount of exercise with Metformin treatment. Our goal is to see if these two treatments can reduce risk factors associated with Type-2 diabetes better than either one by itself.
From this study, you will learn specific information about your health. You will receive information about your body composition, your bone density, a full glucose and insulin profile that you can take to your doctor, and information about your cardiovascular fitness. In addition, because this study does require a fair amount of time and testing, you will receive $200 after completion of all visits.
