ESSAY QUESTIONS

1. Define what are pests in ecological terms as discussed in Chapter 6.

Pests are unwanted plants and animals and are not limited to organisms that transmit diseases but may be any living thing that negatively affects human goals and interests. Pests cover the entire spectrum of the plant and animal kingdom ranging from small viruses to large mammals. (pg. 6-3)

2. What is meant by the term biological vector?

A biological vector is an an organism, usually an arthropd, in which the agent of disease normally passes through some developmental stage(s) including sexaul reproduction, before being tranmsitted by the vector to susceptible host. (pg. 6-6)

3. Discuss some of the physical characteristics of Rattus norwegicus

Rattus norwegicus is blunt nosed, has a muscular thick body, a tail shorter than it's body, ears that are not prominent. It is up to 18 inches in length and can weigh one pound or more. Its color can be anything from brown, gray or black. (pg. 6-2)

4. Explain the term "Target Pest Resurgence"

Target pest resurgence occurs when predators and competitors restrain pest populations and pesticides are applied which upset the ecological balance. Predators and competitive species are then killed off allowing the original targeted pest to resurge dramatically to even greater numbers even when pesticides are diminished.(pg. 6-27)

5. What is meant by the term I.P.M

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the process that combines the best current knowledge about host-plant resistance farming practices. It uses some limited chemical controls to effectively control weeds and insect pests in an environmentally sound way.(pg. 6-38)
