William McArdle Vitae

After receiving his doctorate in Physical Education at the University of Michigan, Dr. McArdle started the Physiology of Exercise Laboratory at Queens College in New York City. With a modest budget (and lots of hard work), he developed a technically sophisticated laboratory where he has been able to conduct numerous research studies in his specialty of exercise physiology. An excellent teacher, Dr. McArdle is proud of his numerous students who have earned their doctorates in Physical Education, and now are leading exercise physiologists at major universities (examples include Dr. George Brooks, UC Berkeley, Dr. Edward Coyle, University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Arthur Weltman, University of Virginia). Dr. McArdle's major research interests include thermoregulation and respiratory physiology, along with physiological adaptation to sports performance. Dr. McArdle currently serves on the advisory board for Weight Watchers International, and is a consultant on gender equity for the United States Department of Justice, where he helped to win several landmark cases that permitted women employment opportunities as firefighters and police officers. Dr. McArdle reviews articles for numerous scientific journals, and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dr. McArdle actively pursues outside hobbies (gardening and farming, taking long walks on the beach by his house, sailing his sunfish, jogging and riding his bike, reading the Wall Street Journal every morning to see how his stocks are doing (he never trades, he just hopes the market keeps making gains), skiing at his winter vacation home, and bike riding from his summer vacation retreat. Dr. McArdle has four children. The oldest, Kevin, practices law, Theresa is completing her doctoral dissertation in the field of sociology, Amy graduated first in her class from physical therapy school and is in private practice, and his youngest daughter Jenny is a college junior. Dr. McArdle loves to cook, adding home grown veggies to his favorite pasta dishes. Favorite foods: Linguini with clam sauce and arrugalla. Pet peeve: Finding errors in his textbooks! Now if he could only figure out what to do in retirement.
