APPENDIX B
GOALS OF PROJECT AS LISTED IN PROPOSAL
(from page 49 of the 11/93 version of proposal R13
HG00793)
Statement of Goals: Workshop participants in this project examine
social and ethical questions raised by modern human genetics and
especially by the Human Genome Initiative (HGI) and apply to them
insights, and methods of analysis and process, created in four evolving
fields of feminist theory (ethics, medical ethics, analysis of science,
and technology studies).
Using these insights, analyses, and processes to focus on the HGI
means:
1. emphasizing the concerns of women and the implications for
women; (women as: caregivers, disabled persons, carriers of
targeted genes, consumers/dispensers of genetic services,
scholars, professionals)
2. reframing questions to reflect women's life experiences and
values, and finding new or neglected questions;
3. seeking and valuing input from women who have also been
marginalized by race, ethnicity, disability, age, or class;
4. facilitating networking between the groups identified in (1)
and (3) so that, in their future work with the HGI, participants
will be able to use these personal connections to diversify and
broaden their analyses;
5. expressly utilizing collaborative methodology, horizontal
decision-making, and participatory democracy; and being
intentional about our process in working toward a dialogue of
equals--in the belief that process is as important as, and
inseparable from, content; and
6. assessing how useful feminist ethics, medical ethics,
analysis of science, and technology studies are for addressing
questions raised by the HGI, both to women participants and to
women who are members of groups not specifically represented.
7. finally, sharing our results through presentations at
professional meetings, papers in journals, and directed policy
recommendations that:
a) identify questions needing immediate consideration,
b) suggest appropriate methods for further pursuit of
the issues, and
c) present concerns to researchers in basic and
applied areas, to women's health groups, and to national
research and policy-making bodies.
Note 1: In the 2/95 revision (scaled-down project), emphasis was put on
goal 4 at the suggestion of the 6/92 IRG.
Note 2: In that 2/95 revision, goals 6 and 7 were deleted because of
the reduced funding.
The evaluators, however, included goal 6 in their surveys; their
results are reported in their report; the PI does not include goal 6
in her report.
In response to a request from the ELSI office, a modified goal 7 was
reinstated as an unfunded and voluntary activity. The results are
reported in Section III. Outcomes: (B) and (C), pages 7 - 15.
Note 3: The Evaluation Team assessed the above goals in a slightly
different order.
