Downsizing is an issue that most trade unions are worried about and working on. An excellent article from the magazine Solidarity on the subject can be found at the United Auto Workers website (April, 1996).

For more info on how many Americans have been affected by layoffs, and how they feel about it, take a look at the New York Times polls that provided much of the basis for the series of articles on the subject they published in 1996.  

The Economic Policy Institute, "a nonprofit, nonpartisan think-tank that seeks to broaden the public debate about strategies to achieve a prosperous and fair economy," has a large website .

Global Exchange, "a non-profit research, education, and action
center,"  has an extensive website focusing largely on globalization, particularly in its "Global Economy" section.

There are plenty of other sites out there with business and professional advice for downsizers and downsizees. You can turn them up using any standard search engine.
