Greed is Good, September 8

On Monday September 8, the topic of the lecture was Greed is Good. I asked students to write something about what Rush Limbaugh contributed to the discussion. Here are two comments that endorse Rush’s view of self-interest, and two comments that are critical. And, I’m posting three comments from students who agreed with Rush’s argument that women should be nurturing rather than self-interested.

"I highly agree with Rush. He is a very honest writer. He admits that everyone’s actions (including his own) are driven by greed and self interest. I am a firm believer, because, if you can’t better yourself then who will?"
"To address the woman’s opinion that Rush doesn’t say anything helpful. It is irrelevant. He is successful. He is the fittest and will survive. That’s what he stands for and is a perfect example."
"What does Rush contribute to this discussion? That Greed is the basic form of motivation in man’s struggle to survive. Rush is so simple-minded it hurts."
"Limbaugh forgot one thing: socioeconomic status will determine who has an opportunity to practice self interest and greed. A person from a lower class environment will not have as high a chance to prosper."
"Women should better themselves, but not if it means they are going to take jobs away from others."
"I agree with Rush that feminists should be nurturing and assuming the role that the evolutionary process suggests."
"Living in a society marred by fatherless and now motherless children, I have come to change stances on feminism. While at one time I felt women had every right in the workplace, I now see it as a detriment to society. Women and only women can raise children the way they need to be. Their professionalism, while excellent in other areas, is best at producing fine and moral human beings. I wish we could all do as we please, but we must think of the well being of our children. They are our future. Society is advancing too quickly and our values and morals are falling to the wayside. Soon our greed will lead to a society of amoral, greedy, uncivilized ignorant people who will be incapable of loving one another. Is that what we want?"
