Short-Answer Essay Questions. You will be asked to answer three questions from a choice of five topics. All topics will come from the following possible questions. They will count 20 points apiece.
You can list points in bullet or chart form. Try to be as thorough as possible. Try not to confuse actual events with fictional accounts.

1. How does Arthur Miller explain the cause & effect of the Salem Witch Trials in The Crucible? (Who does he blame and why? Role of the afflicted girls?) How do the historical records disprove Miller’s arguments?

2.
How do the witch trials in Salem in 1692 compare to earlier witch trials in New England? Where did trials tend to occur? Relative severity of the trials? Why were the Salem trials the last witch trials in New England?

3.  How do Boyer & Nissenbaum ("Some New Perspectives," Salem Possessed) compare the events in Salem to similar circumstances in other towns? What happened there and why did that not happen in Salem?

4. How does Karlsen explain the phenomenon of the "afflicted girls" in her article “Brands Plucked From the Burning"? Do you agree with her explanation? Explain.

5. According to Godbeer's article, what political factors may have contributed to the Salem Witch Trials?

6. How might the relationship of the Puritans in the New England colonies to the Native Americans have affected the Salem Witch Trials in 1692? Please refer to the relevant readings.

7. What role did Tituba play in the events leading up to the Salem Witch Trials and the trials themselves? Refer specifically to arguments from Breslaw’s Tituba, Reluctant Witch of Salem and the trial transcripts of Tituba in your answer.
