III. Essay Questions: (40 points).
With explicit reference to the readings, lectures, and slide presentations, answer one of the following questions. Be as specific as possible (longer is better than too short!)
1. Compare the treatment of the themes of sexuality and aggression/violence in a work of art, literature, & music. How does the form of the individual work relate to its content?
2. Compare the disappearance of the central male authority figure in a work of art, literature, & music. How is this disappearance reflected in the form or structure of the work? (You can choose one art work or the body of work by an artist.)
3. Compare the use of two parallel tracks (dual centers) in a work of art, literature, & music. How does the form of the individual work contribute to this impression of duality? How is it related to the crisis of "language"?
4. Compare the trend toward "horizontality" or "horizontal flow" rather than vertical (hierarchical) structuring in a work of art or architecture, literature, & music. Refer to both form and content of the specific works to the extent possible.
5. Compare the introduction of a psychological dimension in a work of art, literature, & music. Refer to both form and content in your answer.
