Greek Teachers' Corner

Greek Teachers' CornerThe survey of the teaching of Classical Greek in the schools that I have been conducting for more than a year now has located many, many teachers throughout the U.S.A. who are teaching Classical Greek in some non-traditional context in their schools, often combining instruction in Greek with their Latin teaching, sometimes meeting Greek classes before school, during lunch periods, or after school, and sometimes offering Greek on an independent study basis.

Many of these teachers expressed a desire for a new Introduction to Greek textbook that would serve their needs better than the existing textbooks that are intended for use in regular sequences of Greek courses. There is, however, such a multiplicity of contexts within which Greek is being taught outside of formal sequences of Greek courses that I have concluded that it would not be useful at this time to think of creating a new textbook for these teachers. Rather, it seems best to provide a location where teachers themselves can share what they are doing with other teachers and teachers can learn what others are doing. I will provide such a location on my web site.

Accordingly, with this announcement I am seeking material from teachers for the new Greek Teachers' Corner on my web site. I am seeking anything that would be of use to other Greek teachers in the schools, and especially to those teaching Greek in non-traditional contexts: lesson plans, teaching tips, pedagogical strategies, exercises, work sheets, sample quizzes and exams, projects, reviews of books, videos, and computer programs of use to Greek teachers, etc.

All material must be submitted on white 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper with normal margins (1 inch at top and bottom and 1.25 inches at either side) in camera-ready form. It will then be scanned into my web site as pdf files that can be read by teachers on my web site and that they can print out for their use. Submissions should be sent through the US mails to Gilbert Lawall (address below). They will be reviewed for suitability and accuracy. When changes are necessary, submissions will be returned to the author for revision. Submissions must contain no copyrighted material. Once posted on my web site, submissions will be available for use by anyone at no charge.

So, please submit materials of yours that you would like to share with other Greek teachers. It is my hope that this web-based Greek Teachers' Corner will be useful to many teachers throughout the U.S.A.

Note: Adobe Acrobat Reader is required to read these files; a free copy can be downloaded from the Adobe Acrobat Reader download page. Please be patient: Some of these files are fairly large and may take several minutes to download - because this site resides on a major university's server, download times will be quicker when there will be fewer users on the system (such as early morning).
