Structure of Government

The Monster Argument

1)      Voting reveals the appetites of the public.

2)      The opinions of the public are not necessarily tied to the good.

3)      We should govern in accordance with the good.

4)      Therefore, we should not govern in accordance with voting of the public.

The Expert Argument

1)      The people most qualified to govern should be in charge.

2)      The most important qualification, by far, for governing is the ability to recognize the good.

3)      Philosophers have the greatest ability to recognize the good.

4)      Therefore, Philosophers are the best qualified to govern (from 2 and 3).

5)      Therefore, the Philosophers should be in charge (from 1 and 4).

Objection 1: Philosophers will not make good leaders.

Objection 2: What prevents the abuse of power?
