PREFACE

 

While youÕre sailing the high seas, maintaining a travel log is difficult.  The old days of journaling with a pencil and paper are gone forever; though, thanks to Microsoft Word 2003!  With Word, you can easily write letters and even keep a journal (with pictures!) of your travels.  This guide is intended for first-time users of Word with some computer experience.  Now that youÕve decided to use Word 2003, this guide will help you navigate your way through the easy-to-use program.  YouÕll be a master mariner in no time!

CHAPTER 1 – INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT WORD

Welcome to the beginning of your journey through Microsoft Word 2003!  Microsoft Word lets you compose letters, resumes, papers, and various other documents available in template form.  Are you ready to write? Begin exploring Microsoft Word 2003!

1.1 Opening a Document

 

So you want to record your journey while traveling the world of your computer?  First you must figure out a way to get to your destination.  There are numerous places to travel in the world of cyber-space; luckily, Microsoft Word is just a mouse-click away.

 

To Open a New Document:

 

1.  Look for the Microsoft Word Icon  on your desktop. 

2.  Double Click the Icon.

 

If you cannot locate the Icon  on your desktop, travel to the Start menu.

1.     Click on Start in the bottom left corner of your screen.  A pop-up screen appears.

2.     Move the cursor to the All Programs tab.  A pop-up screen appears.

3.     Move the cursor to the Microsoft Office tab.  A pop-up screen appears.

4.     Move the cursor to Microsoft Word and click on the tab.

A blank screen appears.  YouÕre ready to write!

 

 

 

1.2        Understanding the Toolbar

 

YouÕre out of your comfort zone, so now what?  Time to learn the tricks of the trade!  In order to get the full benefit of Word, you must first understand to use the Toolbar, located at the top of your screen.

 

The Toolbar features graphics at the top of your screen and offers you shortcuts in creating your document.

CHAPTER 2 – DOCUMENT SET-UP

Microsoft Word allows you to choose the style and adjust the appearance of your document.  This chapter guides your through these tasks.

2.1 Document Alignment

 

Whether youÕre looking to type a poem, perfect your resume, or record your world travels in a journal, Word provides options for the perfect alignment for your project.

 

To align your document, click on one of the three alignment options from the Toolbar.  Your entire document is aligned in this option.

To align parts of your text in different options:

 

1.     Highlight the desired text to align.

2.     Click left, center or right from the Toolbar. This passage now appears in the designated alignment.

 

 

Tip!  Standard documents are aligned left.

 

 

 

 

2.2 Line Spacing

 

Does your document look cluttered? Do you need some space between the lines?  No problem!  Word lets you to format your document line by line.

 

 

To regulate the Line Spacing of your document:

 

1.     Click Format.  A drop-down menu appears.

2.     Scroll down to Paragraph and click on it.  A box of Paragraph options appears.

3.     Click on the white box under Line Spacing.

4.     Choose your desired line space (1.5, Double). (Figure 2.2)

5.     Click OK.

CHAPTER 3 – MODIFYING THE TEXT

Customizing your text makes your document unique – just like customizing your boat does!  Using various font colors and sizes allows you to alter the style of your resume, letter, travel journal, or other important document.

3.1 Changing Fonts

 

Do you want a professional-looking memo to send to the Captain? Or would you like a spunkier font for a sign to display on deck?  Your font options with Word are endless!

 

To change the Font of your text:

 

1.     Highlight the text you want to change.

2.     Click the Font icon located in the toolbar. A list of Font Options appears.

3.     Select your desired Font.  Your text now appears in this font.

Tip!  The text of most standard documents is Times New Roman.

 
 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


3.2 Changing Font Sizes

 

Most of your standard documents are written in 12-point font.  To make your document stand out, a larger font is your best choice. If you have to cram a lot of information on one page, Word offers you the option of smaller font sizes.

 

To change the Font Size:

 

1.     Highlight the desired text.

2.     Click the Font Size icon on the Toolbar (located next to Font name).  A list of Font Sizes appears.

3.     Choose your desired Font Size.  Your text now appears in this size font.
