Reading questions for Wednesday, September 19

1.      How does Attorney General Palmer justify the need for deporting alien radicals?  Do his arguments make sense to you?  Why or why not?

2.      Which are the governmental agencies involved in the January 2, 1920 raids in the Boston area?  Which agency seems to be taking the lead?    Does this make sense to you?  What does it tell you about the purpose underlying the raids?  

3.      Go through the rest of this excerpt from Judge Anderson’s decision.  Identify as many violations of civil liberties as you can find.  Be specific.

4.      Does the Bill of Rights distinguish between citizens and aliens?  You might want to look back at the language of the Bill of Rights reprinted at the beginning of the course packet.

5.      Do you think that aliens should have the same civil liberties as US citizens?  Why or why not
