Sunflower House
By Eve Bunting
The father makes the trench in the yard for the sunflowers. It is written in the first person by a boy of 6 years of age or so. He plants the seeds and waters them everyday. They are mammoth sunflower seeds that he uses and he is skeptical that they really will be big. They grow tall and they grow fast. And the boy and his dog play in the area that is surrounded by all these new plants as they grow. Then when they blossom the children play in among the plants. They have cookies and ice tea in the comfort of the play area. They play in it all summer. Sometimes it is a castle and sometimes it is a jail. One night they sleep out in it. Then the fall comes and the stalks start to fall and nothing will fix them. But they take the seed and save them for next year. And they spread the seeds among the wildflowers of an open area beyond the neighborhood. "Next summer they will be everywhere." This book reminds me of Miss Rumphius where lupines are everywhere. I liked the book and it is a good companion to Roots Shoots Buckets and Boots because it tells the story of a family actually doing the sunflower house project. I am ready to plant mine this spring!
