    Case Study
Ron Deau is in his first year of teaching in a combined middle/high school.  The music teacher he replaced.  Sol Feggio, was well liked, but feared.  A very strong, dynamic person, Sol developed an outstanding performing program, but the students were afraid to talk when he was on the podium.   By contrast, Ron was young, new to teaching, and without a record of accomplishment as a music teacher.  One day, while rehearsing the band, one of the students was repeatedly talking.  After about the 3rd time of catching him talking to his neighbor, Ron asked him what he said.  His response to her was, "Why does it matter?  I'm talking to him, not you."  Ron told the student it mattered because it was his rehearsal and by interrupting he made it his business.  The student then said, "Fine, then I won't talk."  This seemed to resolve the situation in Mr. Deau's mind since the student was quiet for the rest of the hour.  However, later Ron could not help but wonder about the effectiveness of his response for the short and long-term good of the students/ensemble.
