Case Study
Kelly, a new 9th grade
violinist in the Isaac Stern High School Orchestra, was recently
identified as having Dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hypertension
Disorder (ADHD). A cheerful and energetic person, she can also be
very unfocused, boisterous, easily distracted, and often is unable to
complete her practice/homework assignments. Furthermore, her
dyslexia makes it difficult and often times confusing to read the
music. As a result, Kelly is posing a challenge for the orchestra
teacher, Polly Meter. Relatively new to teaching, Polly is
certain Kelly will be disruptive, receive a failing grade in orchestra,
and diminish the caliber of the ensemble. Polly does not know
what to do.
