Directions: Keep your eyes open and gather as much information (data) as possible during the observation.  Afterwards, reflect on what you observed, organize your observations, and make connections to the MDOE Licensing Standards.  Use the template below to focus your thinking and to produce the final report for your field observation.

General:
Describe the context and provide a general overview of the lesson.

Knowledge of Subject:
What musical knowledge was needed/used in the lesson (observe carefully)?

Plans Curriculum and Instruction:
What was being taught (pay attention to the objectives, standards, concepts, skills, etc.)?  How does this relate to the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks?

Delivers Instruction:
How was the content being taught (pay attention to the methods used to engage learning and the assessment to determine results)? How did the students respond?

Manages Classroom Operations:
Describe the classroom culture, the ways in which the class was managed, how specific behavior issues were handled, and how the students responded.

Promotes Equity:
Describe the diversity of the class, and the ways in which all students were engaged and encouraged to learn.

Meets Professional Responsibilities:
Describe the overall approach to the class (pay attention to organization, preparation, use of language, attire, interaction with students, etc.).

Synthesis:
Draw relevant conclusions to answer the following questions: (1) What did you learn? (2) Why is what you learned relevant?
