History 697C examines recent philosophy of history. Its primary focus is on historical representation and explanation: the forms they take, and whether they are the same. The course takes a pragmatic approach: rather than studying philosophy of history simply as a form of epistemological theory, students are encouraged to reflect on how the course topics affect their own historical practice. The course also emphasizes the usefulness to historians of recent social theory.

This web site is provided as a resource for students in the course and an introduction for prospective students and interested others. It offers access to the course syllabus.

History 697C is being taught by Brian W. Ogilvie, Department of History, University of Massachusetts Amherst. Please send e-mail with any comments or questions. (Please excuse the relatively primitive design of the online syllabus; I don't have much time this semester for web design.)

Students: William H. Sewell, Jr.'s article "A theory of structure" is available online from JSTOR (UMass campus only).
