How to find books for HerbFest projects

Information below will help you to find herb-related books at the UMass and four college libraries (you may also want to search some of the library catalogs listed at the bottom of this page).

Subject headings

A search using subject headings will find the word(s) you type in the subject field only. The library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings, a "controlled" vocabulary for library cataloging. Subject headings have been in use for over 100 years, but change with vocabulary changes. Thus, books now cataloged under Handicrafts, for instance, might have been listed under Hobbies in 1920. Those older books could contain useful ideas and instructions for HerbFest projects. A subject heading search is best when:

A Keyword Search will find the word you type in any field of the record including author, title, subject heading, publisher and notes. This kind of search is best when:

* These subject headings are useful in any of the libraries you search (links to the libraries are below) and you should also consider looking under the common or Latin name of the plant (e.g. Rosemary or Rosmarinus) and if subject headings do not work, use keywords!
