Potential Essay Questions:
1. Summarize the socio-biological explanation for gender inequality. Offer at least two criticisms.
2. What is the equal rights amendment? Why have some (like Phyllis Schlafly) women opposed it? Have the opponents or the proponents won? Why?
3. Discuss several reasons why the second wave of feminism (e.g. the "women's liberation movement") emerged in the late 1960s. Do America¡¯s women still need a women¡¯s liberation movement? Defend your reply.
4. Why are younger adults more likely to participate in movements for social change than older adults? Distinguish effects of cohort from effects of age.
5. According to Roos and Gatta, there are three factors that determine how much people earn: their individual characteristics, the characteristics of their job, and the propensity their employer to discriminate against them. According to Davis and Moore, how much people earn depends on the importance of the job they hold and the ease/difficulty with which that job can be filled. Discuss the ways in which these two explanations are saying the same thing, though they use different words.
6. In what ways does the "Up series" support the idea that there is little intergenerational class mobility in Britain? In what ways does it refute that idea?
7. Research by Coleman and Rainwater indicated that many people think of social class as a combination of education, occupation, income and lifestyle. Discuss how the participants in the "Up series" illustrate this relationship. In other words, discuss how differences in social class background affected the education, occupation, income and lifestyle of the participants in the series. Use at least three different participants to make your argument.
8. Women still earn less than men. Compare and contrast how socio-biologists (van den Berghe) explain this fact and how split labor theorists (Bonacich) explain this fact. Which perspective do you think is the more accurate? Why?
9. Some people restrict the word racism to actions that are conscientiously intended to convey racial superiority. Other people extend the word racism to include actions that members of the subordinate "race" perceive as conveying racial superiority, even if the perpetrator has no such message in mind. Which perspective do you think is the more appropriate? Why?
