Area Supervisor for Residence Hall Security:

            Residence Hall Security is seeks outgoing and active individuals with good communication skills for the position of Area Supervisor. Job tasks include, but are not limited to: Conducting walking patrols of an assigned living area for an evening in all weather conditions; aiding, relieving, & supervising Security Monitors at fixed positions; securing & alarming building access points; conducting walking safety escorts; and responding to emergency situations. The position is ideal for anyone interested in developing entry-level supervisory experience, as well as any motivated individuals looking for valuable experience in the criminal justice field. No previous security experience is necessary; however, we are seeking energetic, outgoing people who enjoy working in a dynamic environment with people. This is not a spectator position! Applicants must be students at UMass-Amherst, be in good academic standing, have a clean criminal and judicial records and commit to working at least three weekend shifts per month (until 3AM) plus one weekday shift per week; most incumbents average 2-25hrs per week. Early Childhood Assistant Teacher:

            Position - #2

Project Assistant – Needed:

            The REU and CAITE project in the Department of Computer Science seeks an undergraduate student to assist in the day-to-day operations throughout the summer. The assistant will help with logistics, documentation and publicity as detailed: weekly event help – catering setup/breakdown, materials organization/distribution, and with photo/video. Assist with residence hall set-up for program (pre-program) and collection (post-program). Website maintenance and enhancement via Dreamweaver and Facebook. Gather and analyze demographic data for program/data entry (possibly also database development); create and process paperwork for accounting, surveys; and general office tasks as needed.             The Sylvan Snack Bar Co-Manager – Needed for Fall/Spring 2009. The sylvan Snack Bar is located in the basement of McNamara in the Sylvan residential Area. The Sylvan Snack Bar is looking for dedicated, responsible, and organized workers to apply. Applicants must be full-time undergraduate students; there is a two-semester commitment requirement, and seniors are not encouraged to apply. Work-study is preferred but not necessary. The sylvan Snack Bar is a non-profit, student-run organization, tasks involve but are not limited to – cooking and preparation, customer interaction, and committee work such as advertising/marketing; bookkeeping, purchasing, inventory, physical upkeep of the establishment, and hiring/training of other new co-managers.

            The Sylvan Snack Bar is open during the Fall & Spring sessions, Sunday-Thursday from 6pm-12am. Requirements: two 4-hour shifts per week, participation in two committees and attendance at our mandatory ALL-staff meeting every week.             The Mullins Center is looking to hire Event Staff & Parking Crews Personnel – the Event staff will report to the Event Manager & Event Coordinator Supervisors.             We are looking for a part-time helper in a lively, upbeat household; we are about 6-miles to Amherst on a beautiful developing farm located in Shutesbury. We are looking for someone who can help with elder care (take care of my mother and my daughter’s grandmother); we take care of her and  need an extra pair of hands to help out; the position pays $10.84/hr; and we have a warm & friendly 3-generation family living in a large country home. Museum Assistant Needed at Porter-Phelps Huntington Historic House Museum ~

          The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum is an active Historic Site in Hadley, Massachusetts, which tells the story of a New England Family and their household over two centuries.

            POSITION:

            DESCRIPTION:

            The Museum Assistant’s primary responsibility will be to give daily tours of the museum and to maintain museum interiors. He/she will also assist the director with programming special events, which include a folk traditions series, colonial teas, special tours, community events and a fall series. Tasks will include writing press releases and acting as liaison with the news media, web site updating and maintenance, extensive letter writing, telephone solicitation, and visiting local businesses.  The assistant will help with on going curatorial/archival projects including accessioning and documentation of objects. In addition, the assistant will help with the care of the historic gardens and grounds including weeding, raking, and pruning.

REQUIREMENTS:

            Excellent verbal and writing skills, valid driver’s license, and preferably a car.

SKILLS:

                        Thompson Island Outward Bound (TIOB) is hiring aspiring field staff for its 2009 Summer Internships. Environmental Educators / Interns – Summer 2009:

            Interested in a challenging and rewarding job outdoors this summer? Do you enjoy working with children of all ages exploring wildlife, wilderness skills, conservation and outdoor adventure?

            The Audubon Naturalist Society (ANS) seeks highly motivated and creative teachers/naturalists and environmental education interns for the 2009 ANS Summer Camp Program. ANS summer camps off day, traveling and overnight camp programs for children of all ages 4yrs to 15yrs old. Camps are based at our beautiful nature sanctuaries in Chevy Chase, MD and Leesburg, VA. Both are located in lively and fun towns, minutes from our nation’s capital. ANS provides a dynamic work environment with a friendly, creative and knowledgeable staff.

Requirements:

            Teacher/Naturalist: Teacher/naturalists act as lead teachers in our summer camp programs; develop and implement outdoor nature and science lessons for 16-campers; and supervise college-age interns and high-school volunteers. BA/BS in education or science preferred; or two (2) years summer camp or teaching experience. Must have experience-teaching children, possess natural history knowledge, and love working outside. Positions available from three (3) to six (6) weeks (Additional weeks available through extended camps).

            Extended camp teachers: Extended camp teachers provide programming for extended day campers. Extended camp runs from 2:30-6:00pm. Pursuing or completed BA/BS in education or science, or one-year summer camp or teaching experience required. They must have experience with children, possess natural history knowledge, and love working outside. This is a part-time position available from three (3) to nine (9) weeks.

            Interns:  Interns assist teachers/naturalists in the summer camp program and progress to leading and implementing lessons by the end of the summer. This is a 10-week, full-time paid summer internship.

            Applicants must have a high school degree, experience working with children, and basic knowledge of natural history/biology. Must love working outside. Housing stipend may be provided if needed. Paid training, great experience and resume building opportunity. (Seven positions available for interns.)The stipend paid for these positions are between $200 / $550 per week.

Garden Apprentice at The FARM Institute for Summer – 2009:

          This program & position are located at The Farm Institute down on Martha’s Vineyard, in Edgartown MA.

            As the Garden Apprentice, you will be expected to work 5-1/2days a week, either Tuesday-Saturday or Monday-Friday with occasional Sunday irrigation rotation. Our gardens consist of a 3-acre production garden, a community garden, and an educational garden. Your responsibilities will range from seeding, transplanting, harvesting, weeding, irrigation greenhouse work , setup and sales at the farmers market, coordinating produce donation distributions, sales and deliveries with local restaurants, and most important working along side mentoring children. As hard as you work as a gardener, your commitment and passion for working with children must be equal. A major part of our production gardens is working with our WISP (work income sharing project) program, where 11-15yr olds are learning about sustainable agriculture while working in the gardens and selling their produce at the farmer’s market for a percentage of the profits.

            When working with the children our primary goal is to provide them with a safe and fun learning experience. We give children age appropriate tasks and allow and encourage the children to do the work whenever possible. We strive to celebrate accomplishments and to encourage effectiveness, independent actions and independent problem solving.

            The Garden apprentice will report to the Garden Manager; you will be working along side the other Garden apprentices, teen apprentices, WISP farmer/teacher, and other farm hands and volunteers.  This person will also assist in all aspects of running a production garden, and will work with the educational and community gardens, and work with the WISP program.

            The hours of work are either Tuesday thru Saturday, or Monday thru Friday, with occasional Sunday irrigation rotation. Expect to work 40-50hrs/week. Your start and end times will be coordinated with the Garden Manager.

            This position start and end dates are: May 15th – September 15th, 2009.  

            The rate of pay is $400/week WITHOUT Housing, and $200/week, WITH Housing.

FULL – TIME ~ Summer Farm-Teacher:

          This program & position are located at The Farm Institute down on Martha’s Vineyard, in Edgartown MA.

            The FARM Institute seeks enthusiastic and dedicated summer staff or full-time teaching positions for the summer of 2009. All applicants must have experience with children and interest in sustainable agriculture. Our educational programs focus on natural farming, sustainability, nutrition, and earth stewardship. Farmer-Teachers have the opportunity to expand their skill set through farmhand and garden rotations throughout the summer.

            The Farmer-Teacher’s responsibilities are for preparation, implementation and evaluation of farm-based educational programming. F/T will also spend rotation weeks on farm and garden projects throughout the summer. F/T are expected to model and impart The FARM Institute mission and values through example and engagement of the children, families and visitors.

            The Farmer/Teachers reports to the Educational Manager.

            Orientation begins Monday, June 8, 2009. Our summer programming is ten (10) weeks in duration—beginning Monday June 22, 2009. Once programming ends, employment extends an additional week to evaluate season, breakdown  the study areas and clean. Suitable candidates will commit to employment from Monday, June 8th, 2009 to Friday September 4th, 2009. Housing is available, a weekly stipend is provided.

            Farmer/Teachers are required to be on-site five (5) days a week; Monday through Friday, from 8:00am-5:00pm with occasional extended days and weekends for farm, community and special events. Programming hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm; Monday thru Friday. One weekend per month, all Farmer-Teachers are required to work a Saturday morning Family & Community chores from 8am-12:00.

            The nature of agriculture imposes longer hours those days we may be putting up hay, calving, weeding or the like. In addition, the summer months bring opportunity for fundraising and outreach events, all FARM staff are expected to contribute to the success of the FRAM Institute through dedication of time and energy.
