Churchill
Neighborhood Open Space Plan 1996-1997 In collaboration with the
Churchill Neighborhood Association, UPP worked to develop
a vision of the neighborhood that includes open space and
land use planning, and park designs. The neighborhood has
a number of abandoned buildings which are visually an eye
sore in addition to being hazardous. Areas of
consideration for the neighborhood plan were: abandoned
buildings to be demolished and the resultant vacant
space, open space and recreational use, public safety,
and potential building rehabilitation. The majority of
households in the neighborhood are young, Hispanic,
low-income renters. The input of the residents into the
design and planning process was accomplished through
door-to-door surveys, meetings with neighborhood
organizations, and a number of community design
meetings. Final recommendations
include a well-defined institutional core, links and
gateways to downtown, a canal walk, and the design of
small neighborhood parks.
