have 1995-1998 UPP conducts research in
a number of areas related to our project work. Service learning:
Service learning is an approach to education that
involves practical work for communities, with a civic
service orientation, and incorporates structured
reflection on the part of students. The Urban Places
Project has examined service learning in planning and
design programs in North America. We have also surveyed
our own students involved with service learning projects
to evaluate educational outcomes. Articles based on this
work are forthcoming in the Journal of Architectural
and Planning Research and have been published in
Landscape Journal. Puerto Ricans and
space: Many UPP projects are carried out in
neighborhoods with ethnic Puerto Rican residents. The
Urban Places Project is currently conducting research on
the use of space by Puerto Ricans in northern climates.
This research will be used in future project work. An
article on this work is forthcoming in Landscape
Journal. Participatory methods
and young people: The Urban Places Project often
works with young people. UPP is examining methods of
participating with youth in planning and design projects.
An article on this work has been published in
Landscape Review.
