Neighborhood
Planning 1996-1997 With the community
development corporation Nueva Esperanza, UPP has assisted
in the designand physical planning of the predominately
Puerto Rican neighborhood of South Holyoke. The process
was started through a community design workshop involving
both adults and youth. From that workshop emerged
concerns over revitalizing Main Street, a once-thriving
commercial district, along with neighborhood residential
areas and parks. Students in a
senior-level undergraduate studio developed design
recommendations for the neighborhood based on the results
of the workshop. Recommendations include a public market
place, plazas, canal walks, streetscapes, and new housing
that uses front stoops and balconies for improved street
life.
