Storm Damage Assessment Protocol ? Draft protocol has been developed for estimating storm damage to street and park trees. Pilot test of procedures currently underway. Location: All States, Amherst, MA

Hazard Tree Manual & Workshop ? 2-Day Workshop held in June at Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth, NH. Attended by 30 individuals from six states. Manual distributed at Workshop. Slides currently being duplicated and will be sent to all participants by October 1st. Also, all materials in Workbook are presently being prepared for delivery in CD-ROM format. Location: All States

Urban Forestry Training Program for NY Regional Foresters ? A two-day curriculum was prepared and delivered to over 30 regional foresters in New York State. A cooperative effort of the Center, Cornell University Extension and NY DEC, the training provided background information and practical training on urban forest ecosystems, planting, maintenance and management of urban trees. Location: Cortland, NY

Urban Forest Health Monitoring Protocol & Pilot Testing ? Working cooperatively with Forest Health staff in Durham, NH, this project is pilot testing a methodology for collecting data on urban forest health. The protocol that has been developed is compatible with the National Forest Health Monitoring Program. Data has been collected in 3 of 4 communities and is being archived in GIS formats. Location: North Adams, Springfield, Worcester, and Brookline, MA

Volunteer Based Street Tree Inventories ? Provided assistance and training materials for volunteer-based street tree inventories in several communities. Enabled revision of Training Manual based on feedback from inventory participants. Cooperative partnership on several of the projects with other organizations including Yale University, Stamford Tree Foundation, and CT DEP. Locations: New Haven and Stamford, CT, and Boston and Marblehead, MA

Development of Strategic Projects for Response to 1998 Ice Storm ? At the request of the Forest Service, a strategic response to the Ice Storm as related to urban forests was prepared and delivered to the four northern states. Location: Maine, Vermont, NH and NY

Model Contract Collection ? In response to the January Ice Storm, model contract for tree removal, trimming and planting were assembled from commercial tree care firms. The collection of contracts was delivered to state urban forest coordinator in affected states. Location: Maine, Vermont, NH and NY

Ice Storm Recovery in NY Communities ? Working with NY DEC to develop "standardized" contracts for communities to develop strategic urban forest recovery and management plans. This work includes the development of model contracts with commercial urban forestry consultants to prepare plans for over thirty communities affected by the Ice Storm. Location: Northern NY

Mill River Pilot Land Use Planning Pilot Study ? A cooperative effort of the Forest Service, Umass Dept. of Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning, the City of Springfield, the Northeast Center and MA DEM, this project utilized graduate students to complete a comprehensive study of an urban watershed in Massachusetts. Additionally, assistance was provided to develop a regional partnership for management of the watershed. Location: Western Massachusetts

CityGREEN Pilot Testing ? The GIS analysis software has been tested in two neighborhoods in order to test data acquisition methodology, preparation of photography, input of data and ease of use. Time and cost estimates have been detailed. It is anticipated that a full report in the form of a journal article will be prepared and distributed within the next several months. A "Project Profile" is currently being prepared for distribution. Location: Springfield, MA

Web Site Updating ? The Center' s web site has been redesigned and placed on-line. It contains summaries of current projects, links to other sites and background on the Center. Address: http://www.umass.edu/urbantree

GIS Based Tree Inventory Methodologies ? Field work completed in two communities that tested methods of data acquisition and management. Included in this work are the uses of pen-based computers and GIS orthophotos and base maps. The Forest Service, who provided aerial photographs of Burlington, VT, has provided assistance in these projects. Student interns participated in these projects, working in the project communities during the summer months. Location: Burlington, VT and Marblehead, MA
